The Superpowers Of SM Entertainment Join Forces With Capitol Records

Released Oct 4, the first self-titled SuperM EP The 1st Mini Album: SuperM aims to unite the superpowers of Kpop’s SM entertainment.

The album consists of five face-slapping songs, all-around three to four minutes long: The title track “Jopping,” along with, “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” “2 Fast,” “Super Car,” and “No Manners.”

The boy band has seven members. Each member has already devoted a large amount of time to their own groups, but together, they will have a “super synergy,” said member Lee Taemin in an interview with Brooke Reese for Apple Music.

The band consists of: leader and vocalist Byun Baekhyun from EXO, vocalist Lee Taemin of SHINee, rapper Mark Lee of NCT, rapper Lee Taeyong of NCT, rapper Huang Xu Xi or Lucas of WayV, vocalist Chittaphon Leechaiyapornkul or Ten of WayV, and vocalist Kim Jongin or Kai of EXO. All members debuted for their original groups sometime between 2008 and 2018.

Though this group is just now entering the competition, the members have released multiple tracks ranging from SHINee’s debut track “Replay” in 2008 to NCT U’s “The Seventh Sense” in 2016, with the occasional release of a ballad track such as Baekhyun’s “Take Me Home” in 2017.

After only appearing a few days ago the group is already ranking third above popular artists such as Billie Eilish and Taylor Switch on the Worldwide Itunes Album Charts.

Their debut music video titled “Jopping” has over 24 million views since October 3. Along with this the Color Coded Lyric Video has almost 1.5 million views on Youtube.

Along with their powerful statistics, the group seems to have a storyline fleshing out in their music video of “Jopping.” “With ‘Jopping’ the journey has just begun and the destination is still out of reach,” Bookish Theories on Youtube said.

The title tracks lyrics convey that their music is a form of liberation and will set them free. “I don’t even care. Here we will burn on this stage. Left to the right. We gon’ make it, make it bang. It begins the round. ‘Cause when we jumping, it’s popping, we Jopping!”

Because of South Korean military requirements, members Baekhyun and Kai, are required to enlist in the military in the next four years. This means that the group will have to disband or split ways before Baekhyun’s required term in 2021.

All the members are on a highway to ‘ERUTUF’ which is cleverly future spelled backwards, symbolising that their destination is still in the future.

Honestly, I love the mini-album. There are many good parts while, like all other groups, there are some things I don’t quite like. My favorite song is either “No Manners” or “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” I just don’t seem to click with the song “2 fast” seeing as it is (ironically) the slowest song in the EP.

The group is exceptionally good at harmonizing, a talent coming directly from EXO’s Baekhyun and Kai. This talent is featured in the song “I Can’t Stand the Rain” in the first few phrases.

The overall idea for the EP is that the group hopes to top out music charts and become successful, yet they know this goal is still in the future. The cool thing about this group is that even though their ambitions are high, they want to shine in their own way while not knocking other artists out of the spotlight.
