Meditation Studio Opens in Cody


Lisa Smith, 25 year veteran meditator, picked up the practice after she was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and cancer.

“I discovered that meditation helps immensely with anxiety and panic attacks and fear,” she said.  

She teaches one beginner meditation class every week at studio Mindsprout.  Smith is hopeful there will be a bigger demand over the next few years with classes growing exponentially.

“If we could calm our minds, that would be a huge step to peace within,”  Smith explained. She also said she would like to see meditation come into the school to help with stress and anxiety relief, “I would like to see us having mindfulness lessons in school.” Mindfulness is “the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us,” according to the Foundation for a Mindful Society.

Smith has seen many benefits that have changed her life for the better. “I’m just more happy,” she said. “There’s just so much joy. Everywhere I go, there are so many wonderful people, and I just think that by having a calm mind, you are able to see that joy easier.”

Meditation and the practice of mindfulness has helped to make Smith a calmer and kinder individual. “Not worrying took me a while, not over night,” she said. “It took me over 25 years.” Smith explained  that meditation takes practice. “It’s a good way to control stress and anxiety,” she said.

She believes that meditation in the schools and community could make a drastic change in the school system. “We just have to understand what it is and to not be fearful, that it’s not a religious thing.”
