Neveah Asay embellishes an ornament for the NHS Holiday Helpers fundraiser.

Students spent last week making ornaments and decorating the makeshift Christmas tree in the mall, all in an effort to give to the Holiday Helpers program through a fundraiser put on by National Honor Society (NHS).

Nearly 25 Cody High School students selected gifts and took donations to support the foundation. Each donor had the opportunity to place their ornament on the tree put up by Student Council.

“[Holiday Helpers] is a local group that matches donors with people in need in the Cody community at Christmas time,” explained Cody’s NHS advisor Elizabeth Hanson. “The group not only supplies presents but necessities like soap and clothing.”

“The fundraiser did not go as well as planned because a single ornament was only $1, we have a rough estimate of maybe $40,” said, Soffy Anderson, sophomore at CHS, and board member of NHS. Hanson later explained their total profit hadn’t been counted yet but could very well be higher than the number of ornaments since some donors didn’t want to decorate.

NHS students volunteered with the Holiday Helpers event for their group hours. “Group hours are what the board puts together of items that a big group of NHS kids can go do together,” explained Hanson. The NHS has been doing the Holiday Helpers fundraiser since before Hanson came to the high school, and with the leftover materials from this year’s event, Hanson said they’ll be set to do it again next year.
