CHS Freshman outdoor track competitors Grace Shaffer, Kinsie Reed, Nicole Wagler, and Sarah Andre have been out-placing upperclassmen this season.

Shaffer, who was named Indoor Track State Champion by clearing 12 feet in the girl’s pole vault, has qualified for Outdoor State Track this season in the high jump category. Shaffer placed first in the high jump at state in Casper.

“[Grace] is one of the favorites along with [senior] Eve Johnson on the track team,” said pole vault coach Scott Shaffer.

“This has been a fun first year being on the team finally. I’ve been waiting for highschool track forever,” said Grace Shaffer.

Reed was a long jumper at the start of the season before her friend convinced her to try pole vaulting. Reed started practicing pole vault in March and instantly picked it up. She placed fifth place at regionals pole vaulting and qualified for state.

“Other experienced pole vaulters have a lot more technique down than I do, which is something I need to work on,” says Kinsie Reed.

Andre won the 5’3’’ high jump this year. She has impressed her coaches greatly with her progress this year. Andre has been competing in the high jump since 7th grade indoor track.

“Andre has been working hard for a number of years and we are all super excited with the progress she has made,” said Coach Shaffer about Andre’s success this season.

“It was a great first season. The upperclassman were really helpful,” says Sarah Andre.

Wagler is ranked number two in the 300 meter hurdles and will take her success to state in the fast hurdlers. Wagler qualified for state in the 300 meter hurdles.

“At regionals, I also qualified for the 100 meter hurdles also[sic] so I’ll be competing in both the 300 and 100 at state,” says Nicole Wagler.

All four freshman girls have qualified for state and are practicing hard. “All of them need to put themselves in the best position they can. They just need to go for it,” said Coach Shaffer.
